The woes of the Strathmore University Gladiators continued this weekend as they were handed another defeat. The loss to the Nakuru Club on the weekend of the 9th of June was dismissed as a possibility, considering the challenges of the away grounds. However, the Gladiators proved that the 0-2 loss last week was not by chance by replicating a similar loss to the KCA University. The dominant sentiment among critics is that the team is clearly struggling, with most senior players absent from the currently active squad. The fresh blood seems to be fairing poorly, unable to maintain the intensity of the Men’s Premier League. Key players Festus Onyango, Francis Kariuki, and Clayson Mudoga, as well as head coach Meshack Senge, are facing close to an impossible task if the team intends to remain in the premier league in the coming season.
Meanwhile Sunday evening was a treat of skills, tension, and uncertainty as fans turned out in good numbers to watch the rumble of the giants. Top placed Kenya Police squared off against Butali Warriors, with the Police proving to still be kings of the pitch. After two goalless quarters, the Police team changed tact and settled for forthright aggression against the millers. The tact seemed effective, as several hard shots deflected off keeper Lynus Sang to settle in the upper net. Despite a show of skill from veterans Zack Aura and youngster Vincent Odhiambo, the Butali Warriors’ side was unable to redeem itself in the game that ended in a 3-0 score in favor of the Police.
In the women premier league, the JKUAT Ladies have been exhibiting a promising trend based on the recent scores. The team held Telkom Ladies to a 2-0 scoreline in favor of the latter on Saturday and drew 0-0 with the USIU Spartans on Sunday. In a league with rather limited teams, this trend places JKUAT in a contending position for the top four slots by the end of the season.
