Frank Wanangwe’s two goals against former champions Kenya Police ensured Butali Warriors took home the 2018 Kenya Hockey Union men’s Premier League title at the City Park stadium.
Butali Warriors started off the match well with an early goal in the 12th minute by Wanangwe after he was set up well by substitute Marteen Fontejn to beat Kenya Police goalkeeper Martin Agesa.
The millers looked superior missing a couple of chances and failing to get past the law enforcers’ backline marshalled by Samuel Oungo. Kenya Police however got themselves back into the match in the 50th minute after Amos Barkibir tapped in a mishandled ball by the Butali Warriors defence.
Kenya Police came into the last quarter on a high with Calvin Kanu failing to get past the Millers backline a couple of times. Butali Warriors’ goalkeeper Linus Kipkemboi was almost caught unawares in the 55th minute but the Kenya Police forwards failed to tap-in a Robert Masibo well set shot.
Wanangwe was on target in the late minutes of the match as he converted a field goal past Egesa to take the Millers to the lead again.
Speaking to Dennis Owoka the Butali Warriors coach after the match, he appreciated the efforts his players put in the match. “We deserved the win, that could seen from the start of the match. The players fought so hard because we needed nothing less than a win and I applaud them for that,” said Owoka. “It has been a nice season and we have achieved our goal which was winning the league,” he added.
