USIU-A Spartans build confidence ahead of ACCC debut

United States International University Africa (USIU-A) are confident ahead of their debut in the 2018 Africa Cup for Club Champions (ACCC) that will kick off on the 15th to 22nd December 2018 in Abuja, Nigeria.

The students qualified for the annual continental fete after coming second to 2017 Kenya Hockey Union women’s Premier League champions and record ACCC holders Telkom.

The students will for the first time feature in a continental competition and believe it is an experience that everyone in the team is eagerly waiting for. Speaking the Grace Akumu the USIU-A captain,she believes her teammates have what it takes to compete in the championship and are ready for the quest to continental supremacy.

“It’s our first experience and everyone is set for the task ahead, we are preparing well and with the player quality and different capabilities we have in the team I know we won’t disappoint,” said Akumu.  “In the past season, our coach was a greatmotivation to us, he helped us and always encouraged us to attain the ultimategoal which was a top two finish and through team spirit and hard work weachieved this goal,” she added.

According to Willis Okeyo the USIU-A coach, he believes the team is well prepared physically and psychologically ahead of their big task. Okeyo who has previously featured in the ACCC for Kenya Police as a player admitted that his side will have to be at their best because of the competitionlevels at the championship.

“I have a young team which most of the players will be featuring in an international competition for the first time spare for a few individuals who have previously featured for the National team. I believe they are all confident and they will put in their best,” said Okeyo.

“We have been preparing well for the championship, we have watched our opponents play and we are ready for them. We are going into the tournament as underdogs but I promise we will give our opponents a run for their money,” he added.

Okeyo also cited that the team is expected to leave early on the 13th of December for them to be able to familiarize with the environment in Nigeria and also have a feel of the playing surface ahead of the championship.
