The 2020 Tokyo Olympics qualification dreams for the Kenyan sides seemed to be debilitated after both the Kenya Hockey men and women’s National teams failed to beat Zimbabwe in matchday three at the Hockey African Cup of Nations-Road To Tokyo 2020 in Stellenbosch, South Africa.
The women’s team started off to a shocking 0-2 loss to Zimbabwe as the Kenyan men played to a disappointing result falling 2-3 to Zimbabwe later on.
The women’s match saw the Kenyans dominate the match but failed to score past a rigid Zimbabwean side. Zimbabwe went ahead late in the third quarter as Roxanne Viviers netted the opener in the 44th minute through a penalty corner. The southern Africans went ahead to double up the scores in the 51st minute through a penalty corner with Nicola Watson scoring the goal that ensured Zimbabwe walk away with their first win of the competition.
The Kenya men’s team Chui were outclassed as they faced their third consecutive loss at the hands of Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe came back from a 2-1 lose to beat the Kenyan boys 3-2 late in the match.
The Kenyans were the first to score in the second quarter after Festus Onyango cleverly beat the Zimbabwean shot-stopper to score the opener in the 20th minute, Tatenda Kanyangarara levelled up the scores for Zimbabwe in the 36th minute.
Arnold Marango was on target in the 43rd minute as he scored his first international goal for Kenya before Tendayi Maredza equalized the scores and scored the winning goals for Zimbabwe in the 50th and 56th minutes respectively.
Chui are yet to face Namibia and South Africa while Tausi still have a hurdle as they await South Africa.
