At the KUSA national women’s tournament, every year a new champion is born! This year, the new queens are Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST).
As part of the 2020 edition of the KUSA women’s tournament, MMUST took out Chuka University in the finals. In the knock out match, Maseno University eliminated the University of Eldoret to take the second runners up. Chuka University is making a tremendous effort and, as the season goes by, striving for the top spot.
In the last year’s championships at Kirinyaga University, Kisii university emerged victorious. The first runners up were the University of Nairobi and in third place there came Chuka University. However, Kisii University did not turn up to defend their title in the 2020 edition.
Unlike previous editions when teams from the KUSA Nairobi south conference represented the city hockey dwellers in the finals, this year teams from other regions took the lead. The Nairobi teams from both conferences got eliminated at the pools and quarters stages. Is this a wakeup call?
Following an interview with Clotilda Chepchirchir of Chuka University, she had the following to say, ‘We have done our best and we hope that the next season we take it home. I am proud of my team and the steps we have been making all through have seen us here today. Our right foot is always set to take the step.’
In another interview with Lilian Akinyi of JKUAT, she had a few words to say concerning the tournament. ‘The competition was tough. It had us leave early and our expectations were shunned but this has posed a challenge to us. It’s a matter of going hard or going home come next season and for me and my team, we are ready to take the challenge.
From us at Magongo Kenya: Here is to strong women… may we know them, may we raise them, may we be them.
