Baptism of fire for Kenyan men as women hold Ghana

The Kenya Hockey men’s national team ‘Chui’ played to a disappointing 2-7 loss to Egypt in their second match at the African Cup of Nations- Road to Tokyo 2020 Olympics qualifiers in Stellenbosch South Africa.

Kenya faced a baptism of fire as Egypt got them unawares scoring three quickfire goals in the first seven minutes of the match with Adel Mohammed netting the opener in the third minute of the match. Elganaini Ahmed went ahead to double up the scores in the sixth minute and Mohammed netted his second goal of the match a minute later to make the scores 3-0 in the first quarter o the match.

Egypt proved to be the boss team in the match as evergreen Ibrahim Amr scored the fourth goal of the match in the 24th minute. Kenya’s effort to get into the score sheet bore fruits in the early minutes of the second half after skipper Constant Wakhura drag flicked past the Egyptian goalkeeper through a penalty corner. The Egyptian went ahead to shutter Chui’s hopes for redemption after Ghobran Hassan and Gamal Ahmed scored in the 34th and 37th minutes respectively. The other goalscorers in the match were Egypt’s Elganaini Ahmed who finished up his brace in the 45th minute and Festus Onyango who netted Kenya’s second goal in the 40th minute.

Stalemate for Kenyan girls

Earlier on, the Kenya Hockey women’s National team ‘Tausi’ played to a 1-1 draw with perennial rivals Ghana in a high-intensity match. Kenya went ahead early in the match with Rhoda Kuira netting in the opener in the seventh minute but Ghana levelled up the scores in the 24th minute after Mavis Berko drove in a beautiful drag flick past Kenya’s shot-stopper Cynthia Anyango in the 24th minute.

With three matches remaining for Chui, they have to pick maximum points for them to reignite their bid to qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
