Green Sharks captain Victor Osiche brace ensured his side won past a resilient United States International University -Africa (USIU-A) in their Kenya Hockey Union men’s Premier League match played at the City Park stadium today.
The match started on a high with both teams dominating play, Green Sharks’ efforts in front of goal bore fruits as USIU-A’s Felix Kiptoch mishandled the ball inside the circle prompting umpire David Omwaka to send him off and award a penalty stroke which was converted by Osiche in the 19th minute of the match.
Osiche once again doubled up the scores in the 40th minute through a penalty stroke after USIU-A’s defender Ian Clifford took down Chris Ngatia in an attempt to prevent a goal scoring opportunity.
Penalty stroke affair
The match seemed to be turning around for the Sharks, as the students were keen on staging a comeback, umpire Omwaka handed the students a penalty stroke that saw John Kabuu convert from the spot in the 58th minute of the match.
The ten-man USIU-A team gained confidence after scoring the goal and kept going upfront in an attempt to find a equalizing goal but could not beat the Green Sharks backline and Robby Moturi in goal.
Speaking to Ben Owaga the Green Sharks coach after the match, he was full of praise to his team for the win and was confident about the team’s future performance. “We played well but missed many chances that could have easily been converted, it was a good match that saw equal chances,” said Owaga. “We lost our first match and this win was like a redemption to us, this season is very competitive so we will be taking each match at a time for us to remain on track,” he added.
