Telkom one of the leading women hockey clubs in Kenya and Africa, is in limbo after one of leading Kenya’s Telecommunication firms announced termination of its 25 year union with the club.
In a press statement released on the 27th of June by the telecommunication firm stated that the review and the eventuality of the decision was aimed at reviewing its brand assets strategy to align itself with the ongoing business developments and the review has impacted on the long standing partnership with the club.
The team that over the years has produced close to 80% of the national women’s team can now run as a self-sponsored club with a different name, get a new sponsor and take up a different name.
The club which is the most successful in the country has won the Women’s Premier League title back to back since 1999 and won the continental title 10 times. The club is yet to decide the way forward after the news was broken to them on the 27th of June, 2019. However sources in the Telkom camp have hinted of a potential sponsor coming on board soon.
