Kenyan hockey fraternity mourn the loss of MSC player Cecilia

The Kenyan fraternity is mourning the death of Mombasa Sports Club (MSC) player Cecilia Wamakonjio who passed away on Thursday, July 11, 2019 while undergoing treatment at the Agha Khan Hospital in Mombasa.

Until her untimely death, for the past two years the former Kenyan international was suffering from Myasthenia Gravis a condition that brings a weakness and rapid fatigue of muscles and voluntary control, the condition is caused by a breakdown of communication between the nerves and body muscles.

A big loss

Speaking to Brenda Wangila the MSC captain, she said it’s a big loss to their team and the general Kenyan hockey fraternity. “She had told us about her condition but we didn’t expect it to be so soon, she was a strong woman and always tried to help the team in any way possible,” said Wangila. “Although she hadn’t played since last season, Cecilia always came for our matches and gave us all the support. It is a big loss to me and the entire MSC in general,” she added.

Esther Mwikali who was a close friend to the deceased also admitted that the loss of Wamakonjio is a big blow to her in person and MSC as a team. “She was a great friend who was so close to me, I’m still in shock but that is how it had to go. She has left a big gap in the team and also to me as a friend,” said Mwikali.

Wamakonjio featured for the Kenya women’s hockey National team in 2006 and later on travelled with the Kenya women’s hockey National team to Baku, Azerbaijan for the World Hockey Olympics Qualifiers as the team manager  in 2008.
