2017 Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) Women’s Premier League Champions Telkom started off their Africa Cup for Club Champions (ACCC) campaign in sublime form with a comfortable 5-0 win over Nigerian side Yobe Desert Queens on Saturday.
Jackline Wangeci was at the heart of the victory, netting four times to mount a challenge for the top scorer’s spot in earnest. Wangeci opened account for Telkom twelve minutes into the match with a simple finish to cap off a nice move by her teammates.
The match was then turned into a locked contest, with the two sides sizing each other until the third quarter when the striker doubled the lead for her side. Audrey Omaido then also got herself into the score sheet in the 50th minute after capitalizing on a loose clearance by Yobe keeper to smash in the ball.
Wangeci, who is also the Kenya League top scorer, wrapped up the resounding 5-0 win with two quick fire goals shortly after to elicit cheers from the unfamiliar fans.
The victory puts Telkom in prime position to retain the title they won in 2016 as they chase their dream of finishing the tournament without conceding a goal.
Strathmore University meanwhile posted a different result, going down 4-0 to Ghana Revenue authority on the same day.
The Scorpions conceded goals from Monicah Grant, Fosua Emela, Vivian Narkuor and Erstina Coffieein, an unwanted result in their very first game.
The Students face a harder task on Sunday when they take on country mates Telkom at the same Theodosia Okoe Hockey Stadium in Accra, Ghana.
