It is all systems go for the Kenya Hockey Union 2019 calendar as this year’s season is set to whistle off this weekend. League returnees Mount Kenya University who have been out of the hockey action for close to two years will be welcomed back to the Kenyan league by Gorillas who are out to fight for a slot in the National league come end of the season.
Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) alias Wildcats will also be in action against Parkroad Tigers.
Fast rising Multimedia University hockey teams will also be in action this weekend. Despite their teams being dented by the departure of some of their creme de la creme players, the management is optimistic of great performance in the leagues. With the departure of the likes of Barasa Dan, Denis Burudi, Rodney Mwale and former captain Ademba Moses to Premier League side Butali Warriors, Trojans as they are called, will be out to have the best of the remaining lads in the squad when they play their bitter rivals Technical University of Kenya alias Stingers. On the other hand, the departure of 7 players from the side which has left them exposed and vulnerable to attack but young and upcoming ladies will be out to show their ability when they host Clydde Mmbaha’s Vikings.
Sunday will be a bee hive of activities at the City Park Hockey Stadium where all the leagues will be represented from the National League men to the Premier League men and women. In the Women Super League, Oranje Leonas will welcome MMU in their maiden match in the women’s Super League.
In the premier league openers, Strathmore University alias Scorpions will be the first ladies team in the women premier league to take on the pitch. Strathmore who are looking to be the first team to dethrone reigning African and Kenyan champion Telkom will be in action against JKUAT. In the men’s premier league, Parklands Sports Club known for their upsets to big teams will be out to stamp their authority in the league when they welcome USIU in the league opener match
